JAMMU, Dec 21: The Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, University of Jammu, celebrated National Mathematics to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of India’s greatest mathematicians and among the most brilliant minds in the history of mathematics.
Prof Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor JU, presided over the event and highlighted growing relevance of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science in contemporary education and research.
Prof Pragati Kumar, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, graced the occasion as the chief guest. He motivated students by emphasising the role of mathematics in academics as well as real-life applications.
Prof Jatinder Singh, Head, Department of Mathematics, Guru Nanak Dev University, delivered the keynote address. He presented an insightful lecture on the life and works of Srinivasa Ramanujan, highlighting his remarkable ability to independently discover thousands of mathematical formulas and his major contributions to number theory, infinite series, mathematical analysis, continued fractions, and special functions.
Prof J P Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs and Head, Department of Statistics, JU, addressed the gathering and emphasised the importance of mathematical sciences in everyday life and the vast career opportunities in Mathematics, Statistics, and allied disciplines.
Prof Vinod Sharma shared details regarding the Mathematics Quiz, informing that the quiz was conducted in online mode on December 16, 2025, with participation from a large number of schools and students from across the Jammu province.
Prof Vibhakar Mansotra, Head, Department of Computer Science and IT, gave a detailed presentation on the newly introduced Five-Year Integrated PG Programme at the University of Jammu.
Earlier, Prof Romesh Kumar, Dean, Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, highlighted the history and significance of National Mathematics Day, making the programme both informative and inspiring.
The programme concluded with the distribution of awards and certificates to the winners of the Mathematics Quiz. Faculty members, research scholars, and students from the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science attended the event, along with students and staff from various participating schools of the Jammu province. Dr Shallu Sharma presented the formal vote of thanks.
