JU and SMVDU among top 100

Sir,
This has reference to the news item,’Governor congratulates VCs’ (DE,April 8,2016).It is heartening to read that the names of  two universities of our state namely University of Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, respectively figure at the 64th and 80th position among the top 100 universities of India, according to National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. It is a matter of pride for our state but it is equally a matter of concern that  the ranking of our universities at the global level is not so good with only the Indian Institute of Science(IISc) Bangalore making its entry at the 99th position in the list of the World’s top universities for engineering and technology, according to ‘Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking for Engineering and Technology’, last year. None of the the prestigious IITs could find a place among the top 100 such institutes the world over.So there is  need to  focus on areas and parameters which are considered vital for the real functioning of these seats of higher education. We also need to lay more emphasis on restructuring and redesigning the courses at the school, college and university level to bring them in tune with the market demands at the national and international level and thus, enhance the employability of our unemployed youth
Similar exercise needs to be done by the MHRD to find out the ranking of the colleges at the national level and publish the names of the top  colleges at the national level and thus, serve as models for the other colleges to improve their position to gain parity with them.
The top universities and colleges also need to be provided more autonomy and authority to generate funds to improve their financial position and achieve academic excellence. We need to work hard to improve the rankings of Indian universities at the international level so that more and more Indian universities can register their names among the best universities at the world level.Last but not least, the profession of teaching should be made more lucrative to attract best of minds as a good number of  teachers at the school, college and university level leave this profession to join Civil Services and other professions in search of better career prospects and more satisfying working conditions and thus, result in huge loss of talented  manpower to this vital sector which is entrusted with the onerous task of producing  intellectually brilliant and highly motivated graduates and postgraduates in various disciplines to shape the destiny of our country.
Yours etc…..
