Journalists’ work fundamental for UN: Antonio Guterres

UNITED NATIONS, June 20: United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed appreciation for the work of the journalists at the world body, in celebration of the 71th anniversary of the UN Correspondents Association.

He said on Wednesday that the journalists’ work is fundamental for the UN “to be perceived by the public in relation to what the UN represents in today’s world, with its good aspects, with its problems.”

The battle for the freedom of the press is fundamental, Guterres said, pledging that protection for journalists and victims suffering violations of that freedom is an important task for the UN.

Meanwhile, he stressed the need to distinguish between hate speech and the freedom of expression.

On Tuesday, Guterres launched the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech, which is a program to coordinate efforts across the UN system to identify, prevent and confront hate speech, using all the means in its power.
