JNU row: SC adjourns hearing on Patiala House violence till March 29

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today adjourned till March 29 hearing on a plea seeking a Special Investigation Team probe in the Patiala House Court violence and the initiation of contempt proceedings against  lawyers involved in the assault case.

A division bench, comprising Justices J Chelameswar and Abhay Manohar Sapre, adjourned the proceedings till March 29 after hearing the plea filed by senior counsel Prashant Bhushan.

Approaching the Apex Court, Mr Bhushan sought a SIT probe into the alleged assault on JNUSU president, Kanhaiya Kumar, several lecturers, students and journalists by lawyers at the Patiala House Court complex on February 15 and 17 as a sequel to an alleged anti-national outburst at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University here.

The Apex Court had earlier issued notices to three lawyers  Vikram Singh Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma  who had allegedly interfered in the administration of justice and wilfully violated its February 17 order.

Mr Bhushan moved the Supreme Court also seeking initiation of contempt  proceedings against these three lawyers — Chauhan, Singh and Sharma  who were allegedly caught on camera by a private TV news channel in which they had beaten up Mr Kumar, students, and others, including a number of journalists, in the Patiala House Court complex.

The petition of Mr Bhushan also alleged that the three lawyers had interfered in the “administration of justice” and wilfully violated the orders of the Apex Court.  (UNI)
