JAMMU, June 5: To avoid flooding and damage to the public property during the upcoming rainy season, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is carrying on de-silting and all other necessary activities like repair on big deep drains (Nallahs) in the city and periphery areas.
“There are certain identified locations in Jammu where water rises every year during the rainy season and such places include Jewel Rotary, Stadium Nallah, Dr Goyal lane of Krishna Nagar, Kabir Colony, Santra Morh, Nanak Nagar, Sanjay Nagar, area near a Tent House in Nanak Nagar, Valmiki Nagar to Ghora Chowk Nallah, Sector 5 Trikuta Nagar Nallah and many more areas,” a reliable source in JMC informed adding that in Jeevan Nagar area, there is a defective bridge where debris gets struck with its pillars causing problems.
He claimed that these vulnerable spots have been cleared in first phase while machinery has also been pressed into service for the remaining work and hopefully by June 30 all such vulnerable Nallahs will be cleared.
Insiders at JMC informed that there are about 50 Nallahs in Jammu which were constructed by UEED while JMC has also constructed certain Nallahs and a total of 140 Nallahs are there which are of big dimensions and clearance of all of these is done every year but more focus remains on vulnerable points to check that water does not rise there and disturb normal public life.
They said that on arrival of monsoon, real time deployment of personnel and machinery will be done at vulnerable points to clear the debris as the Nallahs at such places gets congested and debris gets struck there in very less time.
On repair of damaged Nallahs, sources informed that funds have been released for this and tenders have also been floated.
“There are directions from the higher authorities that all these Nallahs should be cleared and repaired before the monsoon sets in as if these are not repaired by then, more damage will be inflicted by the gushing waters on these big drains,” they maintained adding that there is no permanent solution for this problem because it is natural that when water moves, it carries with it debris, silt, garbage etc, so clearing the Nallahs remains annual affair.
Quoting the case of Chowadi Nallah, sources informed that last year the gushing water brought with it some trees also which blocked a bridge near railway station and the water from Nallah overflew on the road.
The sources also said that JMC machinery carries on de-silting of Nallahs every year and no special funds are requirement for that but during peak monsoon season, some JCBs are hired for each zone for some time.
