JAMMU, May 27: Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Rahul Yadav, accompanied by Municipal Veterinary Officer, Dr Sushil Kumar Sharma, today visited Municipal Animal Care Centre, Roop Nagar, Jammu and took stock of various activities being carried out in the centre.
MVO JMC apprised the Commissioner that besides providing treatment to the sick and injured stray animals, Animal Birth Control/Anti Rabies Vaccination (Dogs) programme is also being conducted in the centre.
For timely rescuing of stray animals within JMC limits and sometimes outside JMC limits, dedicated rescue teams with Animal catcher vehicles have been constituted to redress the general public complaints by 24 x 7. Further to provide best possible treatment to stray animals, staff comprising of Veterinary Doctors, Paravets work round the clock in the Centre.
It is pertinent to mention that Municipal Animal Care Centre is the only Centre in whole Jammu region which has IPD treatment facility. Cases of sick, injured and accidental animals are being catered in the Centre. Also during the treatment, all feeding needs of the stray animals have been taken care of in the centre by JMC.
It was also apprised to the Commissioner that in order to control the stray dog population effectively and sustainably and to curb the spread of rabies in Jammu city, Animal Birth Control Programme has been outsourced to an implementing agency i.e. Friendicoes-SECA through competitive bidding process w.e.f April 2021 and the said agency has conducted more than 8000 ABC surgeries/ Anti Rabies Vaccination till date.
Since the implementation of ABC programme within JMC limits, 25000 stray dogs have been sterilized & vaccinated by the JMC and within next one year more than 70 percent of the existing stray dog population will be sterilized/ vaccinated.
Later, Commissioner JMC interacted with the staff & directed them to work with more dedication and zeal to relieve the suffering of speechless creations by providing best possible treatment in the Centre & also appealed to the general public and local NGOs/animal activists/ volunteers for their cooperation in the successful implementation of ABC/ARV programme within JMC limits.
