JMC Commissioner urged to expedite animal welfare issues

JAMMU, Jan 29: Members of Save Animals Value Environment (SAVE) Society called on Municipal Commissioner Jammu, Avny Lavasa in her office and highlighted the issues regarding animals’ cruelty within municipal limit.
During the meeting, long pending issues related to animals working, pet and stray within the municipal limit were put forth by the members of the SAVE including hiring a training agency of National repute for conducting animal birth control surgeries plus training teams of vets, Para vets, and handlers from Animal Husbandry Department in capacity building for under taking the specialized surgeries in all district hospitals of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
A building of prefabricated horse parking shed inside the Warehouse area where the poor horses are kept standing for hours during the hot summer afternoon and cold winter rains while their owners rest inside tea shops. Also registration, licensing and tagging of draught animals, marriage horse drawn buggies to check animals abuse.
However, the 12th Schedule/ Article 243W of the constitution Act, 1992 contain power, authority and responsibility of the Urban Development Ministry of Union Government, State Government and Municipal Bodies. Creation of cattle pounds and prevention of cruelty to animals is a mandate of these Bodies.
They also requested for allotment of few spaces within the municipal area limit to the society for displaying of posters, flex and billboard to create public awareness regarding animal right in India, compassion for all animals, freedom from unnecessary suffering, equality and dignity for animals.
The Municipal commissioner gave patient hearing to the demands and agreed to direct the department concerned to take charge and initiate positive action regarding the issues raised by them.
The members of the society urged the commissioner to take urgent action on the representation for the sake of the voiceless animals.
