JAMMU, July 5: Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association has decided to suspend work on July 6, 2013 in protest against the unilateral decision of the Commercial Taxes Department to impose service tax on advocates.
The decision to observe one day token strike was taken in an emergent meeting of the Bar held under the chairmanship of its president, Senior Advocate M K Bhardwaj.
The meeting condemned the decision of the Commercial Taxes Department and issuance of notice to the advocates. Terming the notices as unconstitutional, arbitrary, discriminatory and without jurisdiction, the Bar asked the Commercial Taxes Department to withdraw the notices forthwith.
Tax Bar Association will also observe one-day token strike tomorrow and abstain from work and appearing before the Commercial Taxes Authorities.
This was decided by the Association in a meeting held here under the chairmanship of its president, Advocate RA Buch.
The Association expressed its deep concern and displeasure over the wrong approach as well as interpretation adopted by the Finance Department whereof Advocates have been considered as Consultants, in consequence whereof the notices have been issued to the Advocates which are uncalled for.
