JAMMU, Mar 10: J&K Disabled Welfare Association (JKDWA), Handicaps Welfare Forum (HWF) and Women Wing of Samooh Theatre, today raised various issues and demands of the disabled persons, which were recently named as ‘Divyaangs’.
Addressing a joint press conference, representatives of JKDWA, HWF and Women Wing of Samooh Theatre, Jammu, said that the disabled persons have a large number of population and they are an important segment of the society but their voice is not being listened by the Government.
They said that regarding provision of pension, disabled persons should not be treated at par with the widows and old age people but the pension should be sanctioned to them in view of their physical condition. “Moreover, their pension should be doubled with immediate effect”, they added.
While expressing the plights of disabled people, they further said that provision of obtaining income certificate from the Tehsildar may be exempted and there must have the provision to obtain the same from the gazetted officers or the notary so that the disabled people could be saved from the unnecessary harassment.
Expressing their disappointment, they said that the commission which was established by J&K Government in 2016 is totally defunct and it is not known where the disabled persons should go to get their grievances redressed. They stressed that the Commission should be made functional at the earliest.
They urged the Government to issue BPL ration cards to the disabled people to minimize their sufferings. They also demanded that a CBI inquiry should be conducted by the Government against the concerned department of the State, which releases the pension in favour of the disabled people, to find out the difference in payment of pension and actual amount sanctioned and fixed by the Government of India since 1995.
Prominent among those who addressed the press conference were Susheel Sharma (chairman, JKDWA), Sham Lal (president, JKDWA), Dr Kamal Sharma, (president, Samooh Theatre, Jammu) and Anita Chandpuri (secretary, Women Wing of Samooh).
