JAMMU, Sept 9: At a simple but impressive function organized by Jammu Kashmir Democratic Front (JKDF) the statue of Shaheed Major Akash Singh (Shaurya Chakra) was installed at Rajpura Park (Rajpura Mangotrian) on eve of his 3rd Anniversary here today.
Former Union Minister and MLA, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, who was the chief guest on the occasion, unveiled the statue of Major Akash Singh in presence of his family members and a large number of people from various walks of life. They also paid tributes to this brave hero.
Major Akash Singh was commissioned into 5 Maratha Light Infantry on September 04, 1999. An alumni of Officers Training Academy (OTA) Chennai, the young officer attained martyrdom on September 9th after rendering his devoted 10 years of meritorious service in Indian Army. Before breathing his last, Major Akash Singh gunned down two terrorists and also saved the life of an Army jawan in a fierce gunbattle that took place in Mendhar in Poonch district. As a young officer in those trying circumstances he proved himself and kept the troops motivated. He has been conferred Shaurya Chakra posthumously .
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Gupta threw light on the life of Major Akash Singh and described him as a great son of soil who sacrificed his life in service of nation while fighting the infiltrators in Mendhar Tehsil of Poonch district in the wee hours on September 9th, 2009. “He made us feel proud and held the heads of Dogras high who have history of bravery and sacrifices besides setting an example for younger generation that nothing is important than the motherland.” Said Prof. Gupta.
Speaking on the occasion Anil Gupta said that people of Jammu especially Dogras are known for their bravery and have proved their might on several occasions by attaining the martyrdom when the need arises.
He said JKDF will be always at the forefront of every effort which will unveil the glorious sacrifices of the unsung heroes of Jammu and will do everything possible to help the families of these martyrs. Later a shawl and memento was presented to Deepti, wife of Major Akash Singh by Prof Chaman Lal Gupta.
