Srinagar, Feb 5: As the J&K Paramedical Council has directed the General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) Colleges across J&K to consider the candidates from the arts background for the admission in the GNM Course, there are apprehensions that the move will be a compromise on the quality nursing care.
In this regard, a circular was issued by the J&K Paramedical Council directing all the Government as well as the private paramedical and nursing institutions to consider the candidates with 10+2 in Arts for the admission in GNM Course for 2020-21 session.
“In reference to the communication received from the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examination vide letter No. BOPEE/Exam 35/V/2019 dates 27/01/2021 regarding admission of eligible candidates to GNM Course of 2020 in Arts subjects, all the Principals of Govt/ Private Paramedical & Nursing Institutions are hereby informed through the medium of this circular that the minimum eligibility criteria as laid down by Indian Nursing Council including 10+2 in Arts shall be followed while making admission to GNM Course 2020-21 as per the list issued by J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examination vide notification No.010-BOPEE of 2021 dated 19-01-2021…,” read a circular issued here.
As per the officials, there was a confusion regarding the eligibility criteria which was flagged from Srinagar and the same has been cleared by the circular that has been issued by the Council.
The officials said that the Council has handed over the admission process to the JKBOPEE which is carrying out the same as per the guidelines laid down by the Indian Nursing Council which states 10+2 with science as preferable eligibility for the admission in the course.
“We have got nothing to do with the admission process, the BOPEE is doing it all as per the guidelines of the INC and the admission that the BOPEE will send, the Principals of the concerned institutions are to acknowledge the same; be it from science or otherwise, because it is all as per the rules,” Dr Sandeep Singh, Registrar, J&K Paramedical Council told Excelsior.
He also said that in the rest of the country, the candidates from arts background are considered for the course and that the students from J&K with arts background also used get their degrees done from other parts of the country.
On the other hand, Excelsior has learned that there was a proposal of considering the candidates with 10+2 in arts as well; however, the same has not been cleared as yet.
In this regard, the officials said the experts and the nursing councils have been asked to file their responses, but the same has not been approved as yet.
The officials who informed this reporter about the proposal maintained that the approval for considering arts students for the GNM course will not be given as it would create problems for such students and would affect the quality of the nursing in J&K.
The candidates and those who are already in the profession also expressed their apprehensions and said that such a move will be detrimental for the profession.
