J&K floods: Rajnath non-commital over flood impact on assy polls

NEW DELHI : Home Minister Rajnath Singh today remained non-committal over the possible impact of flood on the schedule of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and held that the Election Commission is to take the call on the issue.
Responding to a question about possibility of change in the assembly elections’ schedule due to unprecedented flood situation in that state, Mr Singh told a press conference that the Election Commission would take a decision about the assembly elections, it is the EC’s jurisdiction.     Asked whether the Home Ministry would like to express its opinion or recommendations over the issue in view of prevailing abnormal situation in the flood-ravaged state, the Home Minister said, “We will convey our views taking in consideration all aspect, but only when the opinion is sought by the Commission.”    He expressed general satisfaction over the role/functioning of armed forces personnel, rescuers from the NDRF and central and state security forces in carrying the rescue and relief  operations and again assured the Centre’s full cooperation and help to the state government in relief and rehabilitation.    The rescue teams have saved life of more than 1.3 lakh people who were trapped in flooded areas.
However, still much task remained to be achieved as vast areas in the Valley and Jammu region are still submerged. (AGENCIES)
