JAMMU, June 26: Union Minister of State (MoS) in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh today met Smriti Irani, Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) at her Shastri Bhavan office and handed over to her a formal proposal to set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Jammu.
An official handout said Ms Irani assured Dr Singh that she would pursue the matter.
Dr Singh said while Jammu & Kashmir has tremendous potential to produce young meritorious technocrats, ironically there is no IIT presently available in the State and therefore Jammu, with its geographical and logistic advantage, is an ideal location to set up such an Institute.
Dr Singh, who represents Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat in Jammu region, also discussed with the HRD Minister wide ranging issues of Jammu & Kashmir under the purview of her Ministry.
He suggested streamlining the process of appointment of faculty and Vice Chancellors in various Universities of Jammu & Kashmir and taking necessary steps for optimal utilization of the Central University in Jammu. He also suggested  a campus of Central University for Ladakh.
Dr Singh demanded opening up of a campus of Jammu University in Udhampur and upgradation of the existing campus of Jammu University in Kathua.
Dr Singh also handed over another written document to Ms Irani seeking opening up of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Doda. For the purpose, he also offered to arrange land which could be acquired by the Government.
