SRINAGAR, Dec 31: Militants this evening shot dead a 65-year-old jeweller in Sarai Bala area of Srinagar creating panic in the area.
The goldsmith identified as Satpal Nischal, son of Amarnath Nischal, owner of Nischal Jewellers, living in Indira Nagar area of Srinagar was fired upon by the militants at his shop, leaving him in a pool of blood.
The jeweller was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared as brought dead.
A police officer said that he was non State Subject but was living here for last 50 years. He had recently received Domicile Certificate for which he was eligible after last year’s revocation of special status of Jammu and Kashmir and change in State Subject laws.
The killing led to panic in the area and senior police and security officials reached the spot. The area was cordoned off and searches were conducted.
A police official said that they are investigating the case. He said that the partners of the jeweller are being questioned.
He said that the CCTV footage of the area is also being checked to investigate who were the killers.
A militant organisation TRF has issued statement on social networking site claiming the killing of the jeweller. “Domicile certificate is unacceptable and they shall be treated as occupiers”, it said.
On TRF claim, the police official said that they are looking into it as well.
In the meantime, a Sub-Inspector of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was injured this evening in a UBGL grenade attack followed by firing on naka party of CRPF in Sangam area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Militants lobbed a grenade at a joint naka party of CRPF’s 90 Battalion followed by firing, which was retaliated by security forces as well.
A CRPF officer of 90 battalion received injuries, who is undergoing treatment at SDH Bijbehara. The area was cordoned off to track down the militants.
