RAMBAN, Feb 21: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked after landslides near Banihal last night.
Official sources said that due to road widening activity recently, some boulders hit the hillock at Shelgarhi near Sherbibi in Banihal area at around 2 am today. The movement of heavy traffic towards Kashmir was stalled with road blockade.
The road clearing operation was started this morning but continuous shooting stones hampered the road clearance work. During the day around 1.30 pm when it was nearing completion, again massive landslide took place at the same point and the highway was blocked.
A large number of vehicles have been stranded at different places along the highway. In Banihal area, some stranded passengers were provided shelter at Army camp and nearby school at Nachlana. The highway is expected to be cleared tomorrow morning, a Traffic Police official at Ramban said.
