Jammu and Kashmir varsities

A proud moment for the people of the state is about both the universities, Kashmir University and Jammu University having earned the distinction of been listed among top 100 Universities in the country. It is the standard of education, teaching, probity, elegance and the like that these two Universities have made their basis for academic jousting. Kashmir University has secured 47th position while the Jammu University has bagged 51st. Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru topped in the overall category and all in the University category as well. The twin Universities of the State should continue with excelling in performance in all the set parameters to not only improve the ratings but try to race for the best.
The ranking of Indian Universities and other educational institutions in 2018 under Institutional Ranking Framework was displayed on April 3 by the Union Ministry for Human Resources Development (HRD). About 4500 institutes had submitted their details for the ranking under NIRF. Assessed by MHRD under National Institutional Ranking, Kashmir University has been granted 43.96 score while Jammu University got 43.19, slightly less than Kashmir University.  It is nice that both the Universities have improved their tally from the ranking of last year as it was 63rd and 73rd respectively.
While no other University in Jammu and Kashmir could secure a position under top 100 varsities of the country, the Engineering College of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has emerged on 94th rank among all the Engineering Institutes. It is pertinent to mention that the National Institutional Ranking Framework was instituted by the Ministry of Human Resources Development in 2015 and the first ranking was announced in 2016. NIRF outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology is based on developing a set of metrics for ranking of academic institutions, based on the parameters agreed upon by a Core Committee. The parameters broadly cover Teaching, Learning and Resources, “Research and Professional Practices”, “Graduation Outcome”, “Outreach and Inclusivity” and “Perception.”
It would be in the fitness of things to motivate all educational institutes otherwise eligible for ranking framework to participate in the exercise so that it is known where each one stands. That would give ample opportunities to the management of    Universities, institutes etc to devise ways and methodology to improve and come up as model institutes. Those ones which want to skip and not have their performance evaluated, must face action in the shape of cut in money grants and other facilities while those who maintain a continuous  track record of better performance must be given incentives including increase in grants and funds allocation. That would set in, a cumulative chain of providing a better higher education in the country.
