Maj Gen Ranjan Mahajan (Retd)
At 60, retired Brigadier Birender Singh, son of the soil, stands as a living testament to unbreakable discipline and peak physical prowess, defying the stereotypes of aging with a physique honed sharper than many in their prime. A veteran of Kargil War, high-altitude battles in Kashmir and the rugged terrains of the Northeast, he retired from the Indian Army after three decades of service, only to channel his unyielding fitness regimen into a mission for the youth.
Today, his YouTube channel, “Beast Mode Unleashed” where he issues raw, no-nonsense fitness challenges that blend military drills with modern science, think 100 burpees at dawn or ruck marches with 20kg loads, to ignite the fire of resilience in a generation glued to screens.
Brigadier Birender doesn’t just preach; he challenges the youth head-on, daring them to match his feats in live streams and many “Iron Youth Challenges.” Viewers aging 18-30 can tune in to his YouTube channel, sweating through his guided sessions on calisthenics, yoga for combat recovery, and nutrition hacks from army rations. His mantra, “Age is a number; excuses are a choice”, resonates deeply, as he shares stories of transforming couch potatoes into marathon runners.
His hit status stems from authenticity, no fancy gear, just a park, his veteran grit, and a camera, proving fitness is democratic. For aspiring soldiers, journalists chronicling military life, or everyday youth in Jammu & Kashmir and beyond, he bridges generations, turning viewers into a disciplined army of the fit.
Going back into the memory lane, In the crucible of military training, where physical fitness, mental robustness and discipline are religion, the story of this soldier’s struggle to rise above four fierce counterparts is a tale of grit, growth and glory.
When Gentleman Cadet Birender Singh Jamwal, son of the soil from Muthi Damana, Jammu, stepped into the hallowed grounds of the Officers Training Academy, he was just one among hundreds of determined young men dreaming of the coveted brass. Among his closest peers were four exceptionally talented Gentleman Cadets – each with strengths that seemed insurmountable. Two were national-level athletes and academic prodigy, the third had unmatched leadership charisma, and the fourth possessed unshakable mental fortitude.
Birender was not so good on paper. But what he lacked in raw superiority, he made up for with unyielding resolve. His physical fitness was unmatched. This indeed he inherited from his father who himself was from the Physical Training (PT) Corps of Indian Army.
Every day at the Academy was a test – a relentless cycle of early morning PT, grueling drills, tactical training, lectures, and rigorous inspections. B S Jamwal often found himself falling short. Academics, too, were a battlefield but he spent late nights under the dim glow of his study lamp, fighting fatigue and self-doubt.
As there are two terms of six months each, Birender excelled during the first term through his outstanding performance in all the spheres of the training curriculum. Based on this, he was given a very important appointment i.e. the Battalion Under Officer, in the Academy with lots of responsibilities on his shoulders.
It’s essential to know, especially for those with no Army background, that a “Sword of Honour” is presented to the Gentleman Cadet who stands overall first in the order of merit. Although it’s a dream of every Gentleman Cadet, yet the race to this is extremely tough and challenging.
From then on, Birender approached every obstacle with purpose. He trained smarter, sought feedback ruthlessly, and started focusing on his individual weaknesses. He turned early mornings into private training sessions and began helping weaker Gentlemen Cadets with academics, reinforcing his own concepts in the process. He earned the respect of his coursemates, juniors and the silent nod of approval from his instructors.
Slowly but steadily, Birender began to catch up. He matched the athlete’s endurance, stood shoulder to shoulder with the academic, began leading exercises with flair, and built mental toughness brick by brick. While his counterparts also continued to excel, B S Jamwal’s trajectory was different – he was mastering balance. Not the best in one, but steadily climbing in all.
So finally, Birender made it to the best five amongst his coursemates, and all five of them were at the close line. The following issues prove that notwithstanding the hurdles and challenges in life, determination and devotion enables anyone to excel and reach his goal. Luck always favours the brave.
Two out of these five were belonging to high ranking Army Officers who were still serving. Of course, a bit of influence, connection and recommendations were inevitable.
In the last phase of their competitors was a boxing competition and written test for Science and Military Technology. While Birender was most deserving to take part in the boxing in his particular weight category, somehow was taken off and instead one out of the other four competitors (Kundan- name changed) was nominated. This for Birender, meant losing very remarkable marks for not taking part in boxing which were cumulative towards the overall merit. As a matter of fact he was to fight against one of the best boxers of the academy who had never been defeated. Birender, with a heavy heart approached his Platoon Commander once again for permission, but it was in vain and thus he accepted the fate.
However things started looking bright as just a day prior to the boxing competition, Birender was called by his Platoon Commander and asked to be prepared to replace Kundan as he wasn’t keeping well. Since last week, B S Jamwal’s focus had changed from boxing and he had stopped practising, it was appearing to be fatal to him to fight against an undefeated boxer. But he grabbed this opportunity and entered the boxing ring the next day.
The bout started, Birender got a solid punch in the beginning itself and he fell on the floor, getting unconscious. His Divine powers came to his rescue and he gathered his wits to rise again to fight. While lying on the floor catching up his breaths and strength, he somehow managed to let the first round get over without getting knocked off but was absolutely overpowered.
The second round started and Birender bounced back with ultimate resolve, and finally in the third round he won the fight and with his resolve the undefeated was defeated, a superlative achievement. Through this opportunity, B S Jamwal not only scored extra marks, but also secured the Gold Medal in boxing, thereby adding further precious points to his merit.
In addition, Birender was detailed for centralised duties at a critical stage, thereby leaving him with much less time to prepare for the Science and military Technology exam. But, with his focused approach and hard work, he was also able to score the highest marks in this particular exam.
Lastly, there were also whispers in the corridor that the influential parents of other two competitors were manoeuvring to see their sons excel and claim the most prestigious Sword of Honour! This was somewhere playing in the minds of Birender and there came the surprise through one of the most strict instructors that the Sword of Honour will be given to the most deserving Gentleman Cadet. His all-round consistency made him a formidable candidate. His instructors noticed and so did his peers.
This restored the confidence and Birender worked further hard without lowering his guard. When the results were declared, a stunned silence preceded the applause. Gentleman Cadet B S Jamwal had topped the course – standing not just on the podium, but as a symbol of what quiet perseverance, humility, and resilience can achieve. He was finally the proud recipient of the “Sword of Honour”. He didn’t just beat his four counterparts; he earned their respect and friendship. At his commissioning parade, as the Sword of Honour gleamed in his hand and the pips of a young officer adorned his shoulders, B S Jamwal knew the battle wasn’t over. But he had proven one thing – not all warriors are born with an edge. Some forge their own, one scar at a time.
In addition this Academy Under Officer and perfect soldier in making also secured Gold Medal for standing first in merit, Signal Corps Medal for topping the Science Stream, Madras Regimental Medal for being the best Sportsman of the Academy. He also earned the most coveted PT Blue and Boxing Blue (Each is given to only one Gentleman Cadet from the entire course) for his Outstanding performances.
So, he created his own destiny through his dedicated efforts and Karmas and grabbing the opportunity coming his way through blood and sweat. He embraced his challenges and proved that even if the journey to success is always filled with twists and turns one must keep going and believe in himself. So the youth which actually is our present and future must draw inspirations and motivation from this real life story and take on the challenges of life upfront and I assure you that Victory will be yours
Birender continued to excel in every field during his chequered career of 34 years and finally retired as a One Star General of Indian Army. Today apart from becoming a Physical Fitness Coach, he is also excelling in film making and has created almost 60 documentaries and short films and got international recognition by winning nine international film festival awards.
