Jamia Masjid march foiled, petrol bomb attack on CRPF

Srinagar, Nov 11: Aut-horities imposed curfew in parts of Srinagar to foil a protest march called by the separatists to Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of Srinagar while normal life remained affected on 126th consecutive day today due to a separatist-sponsored strike.
Police said that miscreants this evening hurled two petrol bombs on para-military Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Nawa Kadal area of Srinagar this evening. The CRPF fired tear smoke in retaliation. However, no one was injured.
Police said that a tin shed of Government Middle School Gogo in Srinagar was gutted in a blaze this afternoon.
A police official said that curfew has been imposed in six police station areas of Srinagar to maintain law and order and prevent the violence.
Separatists had called for the march to the Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of Srinagar on the occasion of Friday.
Police and CRPF sealed main roads in Old City with concertina wire and erected steel barricades to prevent movement of traffic and civilians.
Congregational Friday prayers have not been allowed inside the mosque for last 17 Fridays due to curfew and curfew like restrictions in the area.
Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been kept under house arrest while Mohammad Yasin Malik was arrested and shifted to the Srinagar central jail on Thursday. Syed Ali Shah Geelani continues to remain under house arrest.
Mirwaiz, who tried to lead a march to Jamia Masjid from his residence was detained outside his Nigeen residence. A large number of police and CRPF personnel deployed outside his residence prevented him to march and detained him.
He was lodged at police station Nigeen and later shifted home and put under house arrest.
In the meantime, a police spokesman said that except for a few minor stone pelting incidents in Pulwama and Shopian, overall situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control.
“As a precautionary measure restrictions were imposed in some areas of Srinagar city. During the day normal life was observed generally in most parts of valley. Vehicles both public and private were seen plying on city roads as well as in main towns and on the inter-district roads. The shops/vendors in parts of Srinagar city and other towns were also seen doing their business”, the spokesman said.
He said necessary security deployment was made in some vulnerable points in Srinagar and also in main towns of the Valley to prevent any possible untoward incident disturbing normal life and smooth flow of traffic.
