Italy parliament gives final approval to Renzi’s electoral reform

ROME, May 4:   Italy’s Chamber of Deputies today definitively approved a new electoral law that Prime Minister Matteo Renzi says will give the country long-needed political stability but which opponents say is undemocratic. The lower house of parliament passed the bill by 334 votes to 61, despite objections from all the opposition parties and a minority of Renzi’s ruling Democratic Party (PD). Around 50 PD rebels voted against the reform, while most opposition lawmakers did not take part in the vote as a sign of protest. The electoral reform bill, which now becomes law after more than a year of discussion in parliament, is a central part of Renzi’s agenda of political and economic reforms. (AGENCIES)
