JAMMU, Mar 18: As first Convocation of Central University of Jammu was held here today, Ph D, M Phil and PG Degrees were awarded besides Gold Medals to the successful candidates in the presence of Nobel Laureate Dalai Lama and other dignitaries.
On the occasion, Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in Prime Minister Office and former Chief of Army Staff, NC Vij (Retd.) were awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) Degrees by the Vice Chancellor of Central University Jammu, Professor Ashok Aima. Prof Amitabh Mattoo, Advisor to the J&K Chief Minister, was also present on the dais.
In his `Acceptance Speech’, Dr Jitendra Singh said that he was accepting this honour with all the humility, as a token of love, affection and recognition from the land of Jammu which he had served for a better part of his life, with all the diligence and commitment at his command.
The Union Minister said that Central University Jammu has to focus on unique contribution towards scientific education and in future it would be the centre of excellence. He said that a good education institution is the one which has an exclusive stream of teaching and international standard of research output.
Stressing the need to overcome the confusion that has been created by linking the degrees with education and terming the situation as challenging, Dr Jitendra Singh disclosed that 96 out of 170 IAS recent pass out were toppers of leading IITs of India. “This is great loss the country’s resources as the nation is spending huge resources in grooming them technocrats who are ending up coming as Babus,” he said and added that in the process, casualty was the aptitude and caliber.
“Prime Minister Modi keeps talking about New India. Have you ever asked yourself who is going to build that New India? It is to be built by the people of India. More than 70 per cent population of the country is that of youth,” he said.
General N C Vij, in his address, said that the 21st century belongs to India, provided all the institutions in the country rise up to the challenges and deliver. “Political leadership of the country, the Legislature, Judiciary, Bureaucracy and Armed forces, besides the people of the country, would be responsible for the rise of India,” he said while speaking on ‘India emerging and role of Armed forces in nation building.’
While elaborating, he said the 21st century is predicted to be the Asian century and it is because more than 50 per cent of the global output and more than 60 per cent of the business is going to be from the region. “Three of the five economies of the world will be from Asia. These are China, India and Japan. So that the world is looking towards Asia and the world is specifically looking at India because, by 2020, we will be the youngest nation in the world,” he explained .
Pointing out that by 2020 the country would have the single largest English speaking population and skilled force in the world while our economy is rising very fast and at a good pace, Gen Vij said that the only other competitor will be China but the world is skeptical about this country because of its expansionist and non-democratic nature.
He suggested India to venture into the business of arms manufacturing on principle of dual use technology, which should be useful for weapons and also for the civil purpose.
Stating that India is confronted with maximum challenge along the borders, the former Army Chief said that the Armed forces are rock solid as far as security and fence of the country are concerned.
Earlier, CUJ Vice-Chancellor Prof Ashok Aima presented the University Report and highlighted the achievements of the university in the arena of science and technology, education and curriculum.
Informing that 47 research projects were started by the university, the VC also stressed on the technological advancements of the university, including the automated Library, WIFI availability and smart cards.
In the first ever Convocation of CUJ, 14 students were awarded Ph D degrees, 20 M Phil degrees and 43 Gold Medals.
Those who were awarded Ph D Degrees, included; Mohd. Younus Bhat, Khalid Manzoor, Mohamd Saleem Lone and Mehraj Ahmad Lone, Pooja Bhagat, Jawaid Ahmad Ittoo, Mohd Haneef Kumar, Jyoti Bala, Anshu Mali, Gunjeet Mahiwal, Khursheed Hussain Dar, Indu Koul, Reemani Verma and Lt Gen (Retd) Konsam Himalay Singh.
M Phil Degrees were awarded to Shuchita Bakshi, Aamir Ali Ansari (Posthu-mous), Shivani Slathia, Tariq Ahmad Lone, Anjana Kumari, Mansoor Ahmed, Zen Ul Aabdin, Pallavi, Ram Kumar, Vidya Bhaskar Shukla, Sayima Irshad, Sonam Angmo, Nirmal Kumari, Anuradha, Pankaj Bhardwaj, Stanzin Stamdin, Deepanjali Sharma, Simpy Bala Sabarwal, Dolon Sarkar and Rubina Akhtar.
Toppers, who were awarded Gold Medals, included, Aman-deep Kour, Pooja Anand, Pranav Sharma, Sindhia, Priy-anka Mahajan, Rupali, Heena Saini, Richa Vats, Manav Singh Jamwal, Noureen Rehman, Sunakshi Gupta, Surbhi Gupta, Tarun Vashishat, Shivalika Sharma, Vijeta Bhagat, Diksha Kapoor, Kumari Roma, Suka-ndhya Kumari, Himmat Sharma, Seema Rani Thappa, Deepak Antal, Sorab Kochhar, Sonali Rana, Sakshi, Vijay Kumar, Chetana Kumari, Priy-ank Goswami, Anjuman Deep Singh, Manmeet Kour, Akshay Kumar, Vinica Bhat, Sonam Angmo, Nandini Sharma, Parul, Anu Sharma, Kavita Rani, Shriya Raina, Munish Sharma, Shivali Mehra, Somalya Dogra, Haneet Kaur, Zulaykha Khurshid Dijoo and Manik Jain.
Parvez Ahmad, Chairman and CEO of J&K Bank presented recently instituted ‘The Jammu & Kashmir Bank Gold Medals’ to Richa Vats and Manik Jain.
In the absence of Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor Prof Ashok Aima granted permission to Registrar Dr Ravi Kumar for declaring open the Convocation and close the same.
