Two die, 101 new cases in Kashmir

JAMMU/SRINAGAR/ LEH, Jan 1: COVID cases continued to surge in Jammu division especially in Jammu district with 68 persons today testing positive, nearly double as compared to two days before, while two persons died and 101 new cases were reported from Kashmir division and 11 in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
District Magistrate Reasi, Charandeep Singh tonight ordered closure of SMVDU Katra with immediate effect after detection of positive cases there.
A senior IPS officer in the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP), 14 students of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Katra and 13 pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi Ji shrine today tested positive for COVID-19 in Jammu region.
The senior IPS officer has been isolated at home after testing positive.
SMVDU Registrar Nagendra Jamwal told the Excelsior that a total of 14 students have tested positive for the virus.
“Initially one student was found infected at home and his father informed us. Later, 13 more students have tested positive during testing which will continue for couple of more days,” Jamwal said.
The University will function as per the Government guidelines and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), he said.
Thirteen pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine tested positive for Coronavirus on their arrival at Katra Railway Station and were treated as per the protocol.
Among 68 fresh cases in Jammu division, exactly half i.e. 34 were registered in Jammu district, 13 in Reasi, 10 in Doda, five Kathua, two each in Udhampur and Poonch and one each in Samba and Rajouri districts.
As against 68 new cases, 20 recovered from the virus leaving number of active positive cases in Jammu division to 470.
Among 11 cases in the Union Territory of Ladakh, seven were recorded in Leh district and four in Kargil.
Ladakh now has 184 active positive cases—137 in Leh and 47 in Kargil district.
Corona count in Ladakh now stood at 22184. Out of them, 21781 have recovered while there were 219 casualties—161 in Leh and 58 in Kargil.
Meanwhile, Kashmir today reported 101 cases of COVID-19.
Two more deaths were reported in Kashmir today taking the death toll in J&K to 4,530.
Those who tested positive include 48 from Srinagar, 15 from Baramulla, 5 from Budgam, 10 from Pulwama, 10 from Kupwara, 3 from Anantnag, 1 from Bandipora and 9 from Ganderbal.
The number of cases in Kashmir division has reached 215,151 including 211,893 recoveries and 2,331 deaths.
The number of active cases in Jammu and Kashmir are 1,397 including 927 from Kashmir division.
With 107 more recoveries, the tally of total recoveries in Jammu and Kashmir has reached 335,532 which is 98.27 percent of the total cases.
