International Mother Language Day celebrated across J&K, Ladakh

JAMMU, Feb 21: International Mother Language Day was celebrated today with great enthusiasm by various educational, social and cultural organizations across Jammu & Kashmri and Ladakh.
To mark the occasion, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) organized a one-day conclave to celebrate Dogri along with the linguistic diversity of the region. The grand event held at Matrika Auditorium of the University, was graced by the stalwarts of Dogri literary world including Narsingh Dev Jamwal, Jitendra Udhampuri, Shiv Nirmohi, Mohan Singh, OP Sharma Vidyarthi and others. Padma Shri Prof R K Sinha, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, asserted the importance of Dogri language. Vibrant cultural performances by students of School of Languages and Literature, SMVDU, enthralled the audience. Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Registrar, SMVDU and other Deans, HoDs and officials of J&K Bank were present in the occasion.
In connection with ‘International Mother Language Day’, the Habba Khatoon Centre for Kashmiri Language and Literature, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) Awantipora held its first Advisory Board meeting. Vice Chancellor Prof Shakil A Romshoo, who presided over the meeting, spoke about the objectives and mission of the Centre. Earlier, Director of the Centre Prof Majrooh Rashid, shared the agenda of the meeting as well its mission to promote the Kashmiri language. A seminar on ‘Naji Munawar’ who recently passed away and had remarkably contributed to the Kashmiri Language was also organized.
The Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Central Sanskrit University, Kot Bhalwal, Jammu. The occasion was graced by faculty and students from 12 Central Sanskrit Universities established across the country. Prof Shree Niwas Barkhedi, VC of the host University was the chief guest of the occasion while Prof Sudha Rani Pandey (VC, Central Sanskrit University, Uttrakhand) was guest of honour. On the occasion, a poem recitation competition (in mother tongue) was organized in which students from all 12 Sanskrit universities participated.
Dogra Law College organized an event on the occasion of “International Mother Language Day”. Prof Naresh Padha, Dean, Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, was the special guest on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, he encouraged the students about the need for preservation of mother tongue. Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak, chairman of Dogra Educational Trust, emphasized upon the importance of mother tongue. This was followed by cultural performances by students symbolizing the collective identity of culture of J&K.
To mark the occasion, Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (LAACL), Leh organized a poetic symposium its Conference Hall. President, Culture and Language Welfare Society, Ladakh, Dr Tsewang Yangjor, chaired the symposium. A total of 16 poets from across Nubra, Changthang and Sham regions of the Leh district participated in the symposium. Besides, enthralling the audience with their poetries, they also laid emphasis on the importance of preserving and promoting mother language.
To commemorate the Day, a function was organized by the Department of Dogri, Government Degree College (GDC) RS Pura to make the students aware of the importance of mother tongue and its cultural importance. Principal, Prof Sunil Uppal was the chief guest and Dr Sarmishta Sharma HoD Dogri was the guest of honour. On the occasion, students of 1st, 3rd and 5th semesters presented their views by reciting poetry and singing Dogri folk songs.
Department of Dogri, GDC Khour organized a competition for the students of 1st, 3rd and 5th semesters of College on the eve of “International Mother Tongue Day”. The programme was conducted under the supervision of Prof Tarsem Lal, Principal of the College. A large number of students participated in the competition to show their enthusiasm towards the mother language (Dogri). A poster-making competition was also organized on the occasion.
To celebrate the Day, a debate competition was organized by the Department of Dogri, GDC Ramnagar under the guidance of the Principal Dr Udhey Bhanu. In the inaugural speech, Dr Udhey Bhanu highlighted the importance of mother language and encouraged the students to remain connected with their mother tongue. A large number of students participated in debate competition.
GDC Batote organized an intra-college slogan-writing competition on the eve of International Mother Language Day. A good number of students participated in the competition. Prof Sunil Kumar gave a lecture on the importance of mother languages for the preservation of rich cultural identities. The programme was organized under the patronage of the College Principal Prof Rajesh Kumar Gupta.
To commemorate the Day, NSS Unit (KHIDMAT) in collaboration with Department of Dogri, GDC Vijaypur organized a seminar on “Dogri Language in Cyber Era”. Dr Sunil Kumar Mangoch (HoD Dogri) delivered a lecture on the topic “Dogri Language in Cyber Era”. The poetry recitation and Dogri songs presented by the students of Dogri Department made the event more melodious and joyful. The event was conducted under the guidance of Dr Sangeeta Sudan, Principal of the College.
In connection with International Mother Language Day, Women wing of Gandhi Global Family Jammu City organized a programme to ponder upon the various issues related to the use of mother language in which importance of mother language, NEP-2020 and mother language, use of technology to promote mother language, skills required in the teaching of mother tongue, how to develop mother tongue of kids, etc. were enlightened by members of the Women wing. Padam Shri Dr S P Verma, president, Gandhi Global Family J&K, presided over the programme.
Ever Green Public High School celebrated the Day in collaboration with Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nayas, Jammu. Retired Lecturer Jagdev Singh Bhau was the chief guest of the program. Lamberdar Thakar Singh and Tez Ram was the guest of honour of the program. A valuable speech on mother language was given by Muskaan, Taniya and Vishal. Students also recited poems and sing songs in mother language. A motivational speech was given by Dr Karan Singh, Coordinator, Character Building and Personality Development Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nayas, Jammu.
The Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Koragbal Village in collaboration with Indian Army. Locals performed folk songs in Shina language and enthusiastic children stole the show with a folk dance performance not only showing the cultural diversity of the region but also expressed their love towards own language and culture. Moreover on request of locals, a Kannada song was performed by a soldier.
