International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking observed

JAMMU, June 26: International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed here today.
To commemorate “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’, the Department of Students Welfare, under the patronage of Prof Manoj K Dhar, Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu organised an Online Poster Making contest on the topic ‘Say No to Drugs’. Students from affiliated colleges and university departments have submitted their posters which assimilate their creativity and imagination. The event was organised by the Department of Students Welfare under the guidance of Prof. Prakash Antahal, Dean Students Welfare and Prof. Vishav Raksha, Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee and was coordinated by the members of Campus Cultural Committee with technical assistance from Mansi Mantoo, Ifra Kak and Sumeet Sharma.
Department of Social Work, University of Kashmir organised a webinar to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. KU Registrar Dr Nisar A Mir inaugurated the webinar. In his presentation, Prof Geer Mohammad Ishaq from KU’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, emphasised the need to adhere to Drug De-Addiction Policy. Coordinator, Department of Social Work, Dr Aadil Bashir, Dr Majid Shafi, Consultant Psychiatrist, District Hospital Pulwama and Dr Jayant Mahadevan, Assistant Professor, Center for Addiction Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, Bangalore also expressed their views.
To observe International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking, Drugs and Food Control Organisation, J&K Jammu organized various awareness programs across the Jammu Province. A rally was organized by the organization to generated awareness amongst the general masses regarding the ill effects of drug abuse in which along with Senior Officers of the Department, Members of Jammu Chemist Association and Jammu Pharmaceutical Distributors Association were present. The rally assembled at Shalamar infront of Shri Ranbireshwar Temple and culminated at Shalamar Chowk, Jammu. On the occasion, Mohammad Iqbal Palla, ADC, Jammu expressed his views. Lotika Khajuria State Drugs Controller was also present on the occasion.
NSS unit of Government College of Education Jammu organised an online webinar to generate awareness about the ill effects of drugs. The program was adroitly conducted by Dr Shubhra Jamwal (NSS Programme Officer) along with NSS volunteers.
Prof (Dr) Kulvinder Kour, Principal of the College, emphasised upon the importance of such events and said that almost every country nowadays is facing the menace of drug abuse as such generating awareness is imperative.
The guest speakers of the session were Mohinder Kumar Sharma, Member Secretary J&K Legal Services Authority and Mohinder Verma, Special Correspondent Daily Excelsior. They enlightened the students that the drug evil must be eradicated at any cost and public opinion must be created against it. Both the guest speakers asked the students to participate in the campaign against drug use and help others by making them aware about various aspects of drug abuse prevalent in society.
Vote of thanks was presented by Prof Shapia Shameem. Dr Shushma Bala and Prof Satish Sharma were also present on the occasion. The volunteers who were part of the organising team were Ravinder Kumar Rao, Samreeti Verma, Priya Singh, Charu Manhas, Suvidha Singh and Sourab.
To observe International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, NSS Unit (Khidmat) of GDC Vijaypur organized an online National Level Poster and Slogan Competition, “Say No to Drug”. Students from various Institutions across the nation participated in the contest. In poster making competition, the first position was shared by Tamanna Sharma of University of Jammu and Manreen Kour of GDC Vijaypur, second position was shared by Anamika Verma of GDC Sidhra and Angraz Singh of GDC Udhampur while the third position was secured by Ashish Chauhan of DCRUST University (Delhi NCR). In slogan writing competition, the first position was secured by Abdul Khaliq of GDC Surankot, second position was secured by Abhay Kumar of GDC Vijaypur while the third position was secured by Sanyum Kumar of IITM Haryana. The event was conducted under the guidance of Dr Sangeeta Sudan, Principal of the College. E-certificates were awarded to the winners.
Government Degree College Jourian observed the day in collaboration with IQAC and Health and Eco Club and Activity/Cultural Affair Committee of the college under the guidance of Principal Prof Kuldeep Raj Sharma. The resource person of the day was Dr Piyali Arora, Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, Government College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu.
GDC Thannamandi observed the day. A lecturer was delivered by Prof Dr Naseem Gul Dar HOD Islamic Studies Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri. The Programme was orgainised by Department of Islamic studies and Department of Arabic GDC Thannamandi in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the College. Principal of the college Prof (Dr) Javaid Ahmed Qazi, Prof (Dr) Naseem Gul Dar, Head of the Department Islamic Studies Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri and all the guests, staff and students of the college were present on the occasion.
Psychological Counseling Cell of GDC Ukhral organized an online awareness program on drug abuses to celebrate the day. Dr Shafiq Ahmed Katoch was resource person on the occasion. The program started with the welcome address by Prof Iftikhar Hussain. Principal of the College Dr Ranvijay Singh was also present.
NSS unit in collaboration with the Eco-Club of Government Degree College Bishnah celebrated “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” by organizing an online awareness programme including Pledge Card Competition, Poster Making Competition conveying message against the drug abuse and Students’ Seminar on the topic ‘Mass Awareness against Drug Abuse’. Prof Amit Kumar Sharma, NSS Programme Officer presented welcome address. Dr Anuradha Pandoh, Principal of the college was also present on the occasion. In poster making competition, the first, second and third prizes were bagged by Simran (Sem-IV), Monika Sandhu (Sem-II), Tania Mehra (Sem-IV) while Kumari Sunita and Pallavi Verma of Sem-II were given Consolation Prizes. In Pledge Card Competition, Pallavi Kumari (Sem-II), Anmol Sharma (Sem-IV) and Monika Drai (Sem-VI) were adjudged as 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. In Students’ Seminar, Anmol Sharma (Sem-IV), Kanchan Kumari (Sem-IV) and Shabir Ahmed secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively while Vishesh Sharma was given the Consolation Prize.
EBSB Club in collaboration with Anti-Drugs and Rehabilitation Committee and Red-Cross and Red-Ribbon Club of GDC Kalakote organized Intra-College Online Essay Writing Competition along with poster-making and slogan writing competition to observe the day in commemoration to “Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav”. Prof Anayat -Ullah- Khan Convener EBSB Club, Dr Shezad Ahmed Convener Red-Cross and Red-Ribbon Club and Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta, Principal GDC Kalakote also expressed their views.
To observe the day, Red Ribbon Club of Government Degree College Ramgarh organized an online poster making and slogan writing competition under the guidance of Principal of the college Prof (Dr) Meeru Abrol. The program was co-ordinated by Dr. Sandeep Kumar and Prof. Risha Kumari, Nodal Officers of Red Ribbon Club. Students in large number from various institutions participated enthusiastically in the event.
NSS Unit and Red Ribbon Club of GLDM Degree College Hiranagar observed the day under the guidance of Principal Prof Kuldeep Singh Koushal. On the occasion, online poster making competition was conducted.
An awareness campaign on the “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” was organised for the Cadets of 2nd J&K Girls BN GCW Gandhi Nagar Jammu. The cadets disseminated the message that emphasized the understanding world drug problem and how better knowledge will foster greater co-operation for countering its impact on future generations. Various activities were organised to observe the day i.e. Poster-Making, Slogan Writing and Video messages of cadets on the theme “Share Facts on Drugs, Save Lives”. A Quiz Competition was also organized for all the cadets. Dr Sangita Nagari, Principal of the College applauded the efforts of the cadets.
Red Ribbon Club, GDC Nowshera in collaboration with J&K AIDS Control Society and under the auspices of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” organized an inter-college online poster-making competition to observe the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. A total of 20 posters were received from students belonging to different institutions of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. Prachi Bhagat and Rahul Kumar, students of GDC RS Pura shared first position, Sanjana Sharma of GDC Nowshera got second rank while the third position was shared by Gagandeep Choudhary and Tiya Suri of GDC Nowshera.
Online Poster (Say No to Drugs) and Pledge Card Making (Share facts on drugs, Save Lives) competition was held to observe the day under the supervision of Principal Prof Aekta Gupta. The programme was organized by NSS unit, GDC Marh, in collaboration with De-Drug Addiction and Psychological Cell under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahostav”. Students made pledge cards. In poster making competition, Simran Kumari of BA Sem II, Mansi Gupta of B Com Sem II were adjudged first and second, the third position was bagged by Arpit Gupta of BA Sem IV. Three consolation prizes were given to Muskan Chib, Bhawani and Tania Sharma of BA Sem II. Komal and Sakshi Bhagat of BA Sem II beautifully expressed their views by writing poems on drug addiction.
National E-seminar on the theme “Share Facts on Drugs; Save lives” was organised by Department of Psychiatry, Rajiv Gandhi College of Nursing Jammu. E- Seminar was attended by large number of participants including J&K and different nursing colleges, DMC Ludhiana, Imperial College of Nursing, Jaipur, Aman Bhalla College of Nursing, Pathankot, AIMS Bathinda, SGRD College of Nursing, Vallah etc. MS Katoch Chairman RGCN presented the welcome address, while
Anjana Bavoria, Director RGCN and Rafiqa Bashir, Principal RGCN also expressed their views. Later, the chief guest, Dr Bharat Pareek, Vice Principal of Saraswati Nursing Institute Mohali Punjab joined the E-Seminar.
Nations Development Association (NDA) observed International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The day was commemorated by organizing an online awareness programme in association with Jammu Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Government of India. SSP ANTF Vinay Sharma was chief guest on the occasion, while the programme was conducted and under the supervision of Nissar Ahmed, who is OSD Deputy Director of NYKS, Jammu. The webinar was organized as a measure to generate awareness on the problem of drug abuse and invited participation of Romesh Sharma Head Counselling Cell Directorate of School Education Jammu, Vijay Sharma Retd Deputy Commissioner State Taxes, Rattan Prabha Retd Principal and Vice President Inner Wheel Club Jammu, Er Surinder Kumar Devgowda Executive Engineer (Retd), Rattan Prabha Retd Principal and Vice President Inner Wheel Club, Yogesh Jandial Administrator SIRAS School Bishnah, Vishal Sandhu NDA Member, Chetan Verma NDA Member and Dr Shivalika Dental Surgeon Event Secretary who dealt with various aspects of the problem of drug abuse prevalent in the society. The proceedings of the programme were coordinated by Sushil Singh Charak, Chairman Nations Development Association (NDA) and Secretary International Human Rights Organisation (IHRO).
Bharat Scouts and Guides Udhampur organised poster making competition under the supervision of District Organising Commissioner Scouts Udhampur Rakesh Singh. Everest Public High School scout students displayed posters, slogans and conducted online symposium. District Secretary Balwan Singh and Chief Commissioner Scouts Udhampur also expressed their views.
Poonch District Taekwondo Association under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Taekwondo Association in collaboration with Poonch Taekwondo Academy organized awareness campaign on the eve of International Day against Drug at Poonch. All the players of Taekwondo along with Executive members of District Taekwondo Association took part in this awareness campaign. Priyanka Singh Secretary PDTA, Rajinder Singh Physical Education Teacher of Department of Youth Services and Sports expressed their views. The campaign was organized under the guidance of Amit Sharma Organizing Secretary of Poonch District Taekwondo Association, while Ashaq Hussain Member Secretary PDTA was also present.
On the eve of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Police organized awareness rallies and seminars at various Police establishments while as main functions were organized in Budgam, Police Drug De-addiction Centre Srinagar and Bandipora.
In Budgam, the awareness rallies and seminars were held at Budgam Town, Khansahib, Charar Sharief, Magam and Beerwah areas of district Budgam. During the rallies and seminars, students, civil society members, youth, local NGO (Team Abroo) and respectable citizens of the areas participated in the event.
On the occasion, SSP Budgam Tahir Saleem requested all the parents to keep a close watch on their wards, their peer groups, activities and behaviour on day to day basis, so that they do not get involved in anti-social activities.
In Srinagar, the day was celebrated at the youth development and rehabilitation centre Eidgah Srinagar.
The program was chaired by Dr Mohd Muzaffar Khan and co-chaired by Dr Manzoor, Suhail Khan and Shabir. The program was attended by recovered patients, affected families, civil society members, Doctors, staff members of YD&RC and other professionals.
On the occasion, Dr Muzaffar, in charge of the Youth Development and Rehabilitation centre emphasized the menace of rising drug addiction in the valley, its harmful effects and possible ways of drug de-addiction.
During the event, some of the admitted patients also shared their experiences and the problems they face in getting back on track. Attendants and parents also shared their agony caused by the devastating effects of drugs.
In Bandipora, the program was chaired by DySP DAR Bandipora Ishfaq Alam and was attended by Prof Mohammad Ismayil Ashna (Patron Mehboobul Alam Group of Institutions), respectable citizens, civil society members, educationists, students of Space Age Higher Secondary Institute Kaloosa, youths and officials/ jawans of Bandipora police also participated in the event.
On the occasion of International day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Indian Army organised a talk on Drug Awareness in the remote areas of Chamalwas, Banihal. The talk emphasized on various sources of drugs and how to identify those to restrict entry of narcotic substances into the region. Mufti Shakeel Ahmed Sohail, Imam in Dar-ul-Uloom Madrassa at Chaknarwah also made a speech on this occasion.
