Intense dry, cold weather in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Dec 28:  Even as the day temperatures showed considerable improvement today, the night temperatures fell several notches below normal in Kashmir. The Leh remained coldest with the night temperature settling at minus 12 degree Celsius. However, the weatherman has forecast light snowfall on new year.
The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar was minus 2.7 degree Celsius against yesterday’s minus of 0.9 degree Celsius. It was minus 3.2 degree Celsius a day earlier. However, the winter Sun appeared after remaining behind the clouds for the last couple of days providing much needed relief to the people from the bone chilling cold. The day temperature settled at 11.8 degree Celsius, four notches above normal.
Majority of the water bodies were partially frozen due to freezing temperature. The fringes of Dal lake and other water bodies remained frozen.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg, was the coldest recorded place in the Valley with a low of minus 5.4 degree Celsius against yesterday’s minus 7.6 degree  Celsius. The day temperature of the place settled at 3.6 degree Celsius.
Leh was the coldest recorded place in the State as the mercury plummeted and settled at minus 12 degree Celsius. Leh had recorded a low of minus 4.7 degree  Celsius the previous night. However, the day temperature settled at 4.1 degree Celsius.
Kargil, recorded a minimum of minus 11 degree Celsius, making it the second coldest place in the State. However, day temperature settled at 0.6 degree Celsius.
In Pahalgam, the minimum temperature dropped and settled at minus 2.9 degree Celsius. The day temperature was, however, recorded at 10 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature in North Kashmir town of Kupwara was minus 1.5 degree Celsius, while the southern Kokernag resort recorded a low of minus 2.4 degree Celsius against yesterday’s minus 1.8 degree Celsius. The day temperature at Kupwara and Kokernag settled at 12.0 degree Celsius and 10.3 degree Celsius respectively.
Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 2.2 degree Celsius and the day temperature settled at 11.9 degree Celsius.
The MeT department said that weather in Kashmir valley will remain mostly dry for the next 48 hours with maximum and minimum temperatures settling at 11 degree Celsius and minus 4 degree Celsius respectively.  However, there will be light snow and rains on the new year’s eve.
The MeT department said that weather in Jammu will also remain mostly dry for the next 48 hours with maximum and minimum temperatures settling at 23 degree Celsius and 6 degree Celsius respectively.
The MeT department said that weather in Ladakh will also remain mostly dry for the next 48 hours with maximum and minimum temperatures settling at 4 degree Celsius and minus 13 degree Celsius respectively.
