The infiltrator was challenged by the troops guarding the LoC in Mendhar sector when he was trying to sneak into this side from across the border, the officials said.
His identity couldn’t be established immediately.
They said the intruder paid no heed to the repeated warnings and tried to flee back when troops opened fire, resulting in his death.
The whole area has been cordoned off and search operations launched in the area.
Troops recovered one powerful IED and some drugs from the possession of slain intruder.
A major tragedy has been averted with the killing of infiltrator as he was bringing with him a powerful IED which had to be planted by the militants to target security personnel and civilians.
Security forces have been maintaining a high alert along the LoC in twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch to thwart infiltration attempts by the militants.
There were reports that Pakistan army was planning to push militants into Jammu and Kashmir to cause disturbances ahead of G20 meeting in Srinagar. However, alert troops didn’t allow the infiltration attempts to succeed.
