Infiltration bid foiled in Keran; soldier, militant killed

SRINAGAR, Nov 22: A militant and a soldier were killed in a gun battle along Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.
Srinagar based Defence spokesman said that soldiers manning the fence near Chunkun post in Farkian Gali of Keran intercepted a group of infiltrators this afternoon.
“A militant and a soldier have been killed in an ongoing operation so far”, the spokesman said, adding that two more soldiers suffered bullet injures and have been hospitalized.
Sources said that soldiers of 9 Sikh Li were patrolling near Chunkan Post in Keran sector and they came under barrage of fire from militants at about 1.45 pm.
The Army personnel retaliated and in the exchange of fire, one soldier Mandeep Singh of 9 Sikh LI sustained injuries. He was shifted to Military Hospital Drugmulla where doctors declared him as brought dead.

Two injured soldiers have been identified as Naik Jagdeep Singh and Naik Harmesh and condition of both of them is stated to be stable. Meanwhile, reinforcements of Army’s para troopers were rushed to the spot and massive searches are underway.
In the meanwhile, a massive search operation in Zirhama area of Kupwara district continues on second day today but security forces could not intercept militants anywhere. The soldiers including those from elite para were also involved in the searches.
A para-commando was killed in an encounter at Zirhama and two more troopers were injured yesterday during the operation against a group of militants of LeT. Sources said that a militant group of Lashkar-e-Toiba headed by Saifullah were on their way towards Line of Control (LoC) to receive a group of infiltrators when security forces got an input and launched searches in the area.
In the meantime, the operation launched by security forces in Rajwar forests of Handwara in the frontier district of Kupwara two days back after reports of presence of a heavily armed militant group continued today.
The operation was launched by Handwara Police, 21-RR,32-RR,6-RR of Army,30 and 92 Battalions of  CRPF in the Forest Compartment of 8,9,10 and 11 in Handwara. This is one of the major operations that has been launched this year.
Meanwhile, a cordon and search operation was launched by Army, police and CRPF at Bamnoo in Keller area of Pulwama district. The forces conducted searches in the village but no one was arrested.
Security forces today launched a cordon and search operation in Harmain area of Shopian district of Kashmir after inputs about presence of militants in the area.
