SRINAGAR, June 11: Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police (DGP), K Rajendra, today said that there is lot of concentration of militants across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and there are intelligence reports that the infiltration attempts will increase.
Police chief said that intelligence reports suggest that there will be rise in the levels of infiltration. “Attempts are being made from across and there is lot of concentration. There are intelligence reports that the attempts of infiltration will increase”, he said.
Rajendra, however, said that the troops along the LoC are alert and they have foiled several infiltration attempts recently. “You must have seen during past few weeks that several infiltration attempts have been foiled and it is result of that only. Our forces are alert and they have foiled all these infiltration attempts”, he added.
The Police chief said that there are around 100-200 militants waiting across near the LoC for infiltration. He said that the number of infiltrators waiting near the LoC vary from time to time. “The figures vary from time to time. Giving one number is difficult. Sometimes there are reports of 100, 150 and 200 infiltrators waiting across. It also varies from agency to agency”, he said.
Rajendra said that there are around 40 militants operating in the border district of Kupwara. “40 militants are operating in Kupwara district including Handwara”, he said.
It may be mentioned here that eight militants were killed in four separate infiltration bids since last three weeks along the LoC in North Kashmir. Two soliders were also killed and an officer injured while countering these bids.
The Police chief said that they have conducted investigations into the attack on the telecoms and the people involved in it have been identified. “The people behind it have been identified and action will be taken against them”, he said.
Rajendra said that after couple of attacks in Sopore area of North Kashmir, some towers were shutdown due to fear. “It is more of hype. There were couple of attacks and due to fear some towers were shutdown. We have investigated it and today all the mobile towers are functioning normally”, he said.
The Police chief said that if need arises towers will be provided security so that cell phones remain operational. “Wherever need arises we will provide security to the towers”, he added.
It may be mentioned here that 2 persons were killed and 4 injured when militants attacked telecoms in Kashmir disrupting the services for almost a week in North Kashmir and two days in other parts. However, police restored it by providing security to some towers.
When asked about the enhancement of the salaries of the Special Police Officers (SPOs) working with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Rajendra said they have to wait for it.
The DGP said that they are assessing the situation on Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s seminar to be held on June 14. “We are assessing the situation and local administration will take a decision on it”, he said.
