NEW DELHI, Mar 6 : Referring to the lifestyle changes happening in the Indian society where cooking at home becoming lesser and lesser, union Culture and Tourism Minister, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has said that India is poised for industrialisation of its food, which would unlock a wave of new opportunities for food startups and aspiring food entrepreneurs to realise their entrepreneurial dreams.
The union minister was addressing an event organised by Swiggy in the national capital to recognise and facilitate successful women food entrepreneurs and chefs from across the country.
Shekhawat said that the world is turning to health food in a big way which will again open up opportunities to re-discover some of the lost recipes of India and present to the world.
He said that the whole world is looking towards the East for healthy food concepts, and Indian restaurants are multiplying across the world in big numbers. City of Berlin alone has 800 Indian restaurants, Tokyo has 100 Indian food joints, he said, where there was nothing a few years ago.
While India has become a self-sufficient in food, Shekhawat said that the country is still lagging behind on the processing side. There is humungous opportunities to process Indian agri products to the international taste, package it and present it in a convenient or ready to eat format to the world, he said.
Appreciating the women entrepreneurs for their grit and determination to convert their dreams into reality, the minister said that it talks volumes about India’s startup ecosystem and how technology is making it easy for people to create successful ventures.
Around 30 women food entrepreneurs and chefs from across the country have been felicitated at the second annual – She The Change – From Vision to Venture – event organised by Swiggy.
Speaking at the event, Sriharsha Majeti, MD & CEO, Swiggy said that there are approximately 70,000 women led restaurant partners on the platform currently and the intention is to grow it to a lakh partners in the next few years. He said that thriving food economy of the country is unlocking a lot of entrepreneurial energy and reshaping India’s food ecosystem.
