Hilarious news for sports lovers is that the Indian Women Hockey team has lifted the Asia Cup playing against China and defeating the rivals by 5-4 margin. This victory qualifies the Indian Women Hockey team for the World Hockey Cup 2018. Daily Excelsior extends hearty felicitations to the Indian Women’s Hockey team on this brilliant and well earned victory over a formidable rival by demonstrating superior skill of attack and defence.
We have always believed and continue to believe that our youth have tremendous talent perhaps no less explicit that any other nation. However, where we falter is in providing them the opportunity for exposure. We also fault at not providing them all facilities needed to make them super stars in various games and sports. We are very eager to see that this team wins the world title next year and makes India proud. We know that our coaches of the team are the best in the world and they will certainly make the team also strong as to win the laurel.
India is not a small country. We have a vast population from which we shall have to make selection of the best sports persons and athletes. One complaint that has come in again and again is favouritism in selection of players. There are innumerable complaints that more often than not selection of the players is made with eye to factors other than merit. This is discouraging the candidates with real merit. We hope that a mechanism will be evolved which would be foolproof against favouritism. Secondly, the oft-repeated axiom is that of catch them young. It means that all serious efforts should be made to identify the sports-minded students at an early age say the school going age. We would suggest that each state and each district has a sports selection team that moves from school to school, public as well as private to make selection of talented students who excel in sports and provide them with scholarship and other facilities to become proficient in their field of sports so that one day they qualify for national status. On this way we can take a big step towards raising extraordinarily efficient and impressive teams in all sports and athletic activities. It is a matter of shame that with 125 crore population we are not able to win gold in the Olympics. This jinx has to be broken and India has to become next to none in world sports contests.
