SRINAGAR, June 19: The Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC) today organized a seminar focusing on the capacity-building program for the export of traditional Indian skill products, including Geographical Indication (GI) and other allied skill products, from the J&K and Ladakh regions.
The event was organized ISEPC and was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and Textiles, Government of India. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between ISEPC and JKPPO on this occasion.
The seminar witnessed the participation of various stakeholders in J&K and Ladakh, including entrepreneurs, weavers, and representatives from Government departments.
It was given out on the occasion that J&K recently secured the 3rd position among Union Territories in the 2nd edition of the Export Preparedness Index conducted by Niti Aayog. “This achievement propelled J&K’s overall ranking from 36th to 23rd place, with its scores increasing from 12.27 to 30.07.”
On the occasion, it was stated that the region aims to boost its goods and services exports to reach a value of USD 900 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24, representing a growth rate of approximately 15%. “This remarkable achievement is particularly notable considering the current global challenges.”
As per details provided, in 2022-23, J&K’s exports stood at USD 89.77 million, with major export categories including handloom, handicrafts, silk carpets, textiles, silk products, apples, fruits, pulses, and rice.
The Managing Director of JKTPO was present at the seminar along with other stakeholders to energize entrepreneurs, start-ups, existing exporters, and weavers under the initiative of the Department of Commerce in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Textiles.
The capacity-building program covered several topics aimed at promoting international trade and providing clarity on export business operations.
Some of the key areas discussed included the scope of industries in J&K, the process of starting an export business, the role of e-commerce in promoting exports, the role of Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) in international trade, and the benefits of export promotion schemes.
Representatives from the Directorate of Handicrafts & Handlooms, Directorate of Sericulture, Directorate of IICT, Srinagar, and other stakeholders actively participated in the program.
Dr. Bilal Mawandia, Vice Chairman, Sanjeev Kr. Sharma, Additional Executive Director, and Sheikh Aslam Ahmad, Member COA ISEPC & Chief Information Officer -ISEP, were also present during the seminar.
