NEW DELHI, Aug 13: In a significant development for India’s mobile accessories market, Praveen Khandelwal, Member of Parliament and Secretary General of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), unveiled the world’s first BIS-certified tempered glass screen protector for smartphones. The product, developed by Optiemus Infracom Limited in collaboration with US-based Corning Incorporated, marks a milestone in India’s push for self-reliance in manufacturing.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has, for the first time, introduced specific quality norms for chemically tempered glass screen protectors, ensuring durability and consumer safety. Each protector carries a ‘fog marking’ manufacturer branding to help users distinguish genuine products from counterfeits.
Khandelwal described the launch as a moment of pride for India, stating that the new standards set a global benchmark in quality assurance while strengthening domestic manufacturing.
India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, consumes nearly 400 million tempered glass screen protectors annually, with the market estimated to reach Rs 20,000 crore in 2025. Currently, over 90 per cent of these protectors are imported, often of inconsistent quality.
RhinoTech, Optiemus’s Indian brand, is leading the shift by manufacturing these protectors locally using Corning’s technology, targeting both domestic and international markets. The move is expected to boost India’s manufacturing sector, generate employment, and offer high-quality alternatives to imported products.
The initiative aligns with the government’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, positioning India as a potential global hub for premium mobile screen protection solutions.
