Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of PDP workers’ convention in South Kashmir’s Kulgam, Mehbooba said: “All the leaders of BJP are suffering from mental disease. This is a secular nation and people of all faiths are living together. Whosoever talks against this tradition should consult a psychiatrist and correct his mental balance. Amit Shah should seek an apology from the people of this country. It is a nation of Gandhi, not Amit Shah or Modi”, she said.
On PM’s remark that Abdullahs and Muftis have destroyed three generations of Kashmir, the PDP president said it is his party that came begging to the doors of these two families.”BJP is forgetting that during the 90s they came begging at the doors of Abdullah and made Omar a Minister in his Government so that he can propagate their Kashmir agenda throughout the world. In the same way, when elections results were declared in 2015, they deputed Ram Madhav to Kashmir for two months. He pleaded before Mufti Sayeed for two months for the Government formation accepting all the conditions: no tinkering with 370, end of AFSPA, the return of power projects and talks with Pakistan. They accepted all the conditions of the same Mufti whom they are criticizing today”, she said.
Mehbooba lashed out Congress and the BJP and said that they have been and are terrifying Kashmiris. “The way Congress hanged Afzal Guru in 2008 despite being at number 28 on the list and showed how hard can they deal with Kashmiris, in the same way, the crackdowns are being conducted, people arrested. All this is done to terrify people and get votes across the country and nothing else”, she said.
The PDP president when asked about the party losing ground in its PDP bastion said: “It still is a PDP’s stronghold. People are terrified due to frequent encounters and killings. South Kashmir was my home and will always be my home.”
Earlier addressing the rally, Mehbooba termed PDP’s self rule formula the most pragmatic approach to resolve the decades old Kashmir conflict and reiterated that peace will remain elusive in the State unless peoples’ aspirations aren’t taken into account by both India and Pakistan.
The PDP president said that the world has now realised how Kashmir issue, if allowed to remain unsettled, could become a major cause for pushing both India and Pakistan towards brink of a nuclear war. She said that it is high time that both the countries for their greater common good address Kashmir issue on priority and to begin with, PDP’s self rule formula is the best option as already described by the saner voices of South Asia.
“It was Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who made confidence building measures and engagement both internally and externally the most inseparable features of Kashmir and made people at the helm in New Delhi and Islamabad realize that Jammu and Kashmir could be opened up to the rest of the world through all our traditional routes to China, central Asia and other geographies. We have been demanding that the two fragmented parts of Kashmir must be made into a single unit without changing borders and free trade, free movement of people, students and professionals, joint initiatives in tourism and education is initiated,” Mehbooba said.
