Sir,
This is in reference to the letter titled ‘Erosion of Moral Values’ dated 13 May 2019 published in the Daily Excelsior .The writer has wisely described the facts leading to deterioration of moral values over the past few years and has also described the role of school and family in preserving the cultural heritage . In fact, the children of today are so much into studies and games that somewhere they miss the cultural heritage that should get transmitted to them from their respective homes and schools. There is cut throat competition everywhere- be it school, college, office or any other talent competition. In today’s materialistic world people are jealous of each other’s progress. Envy is reigning supreme. The previous generation has failed to show younger generation the Value of our culture. Our youth today is highly influenced by American and European culture but those who advocate and blame younger generation of aping the west should not forget that they are themselves from head to toe themselves dyed in the western culture-be it their dress, living style, food preferences etc. We must dig into our own culture and pull out something really valuable and live by it. We need to show younger generation the Value. Indian culture is good enough to influence people all around the globe. It is rich in variety and colour. We teach children History , Geography ,Science but not culture. It is pathetic. We should not stand against incorporating new patterns into our culture but at the same time we can’t ignore what we already have. The elders should practice what they preach. Elders should be prepared to believe in, “As you sow, so shall you reap”.
