Improving health services

State Health Services are improving but we need it to improve on faster pace. In the present context, when focus is on rural health, it is desirable that district hospitals are provided advanced facilities so that patients are not forced to come to city hospitals and thus make them more overcrowded. In a recently held meeting of top functionaries of the health department, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Sham Lal Sharma impressed upon CMOs and others at responsible positions to be fully geared to the challenges they are facing. It is a welcome decision that some additional equipment including dialysis will be provided to two prestigious medical institutions of Jammu, one at Sarwal and the other at Gandhi Nagar. This is a good step but much more remains to be done. The Minister has hinted at a number of health-related activities to which concerned officers and CMOs should pay attention. School Health Programme has been devised to provide facility to school going children to maintain their health, particularly the eyesight and dental care. Likewise the minister has also stressed upon concerned authorities to go on regular periodic checks at diagnostic centers lest somebody misuses ultrasound in way that violates PNDT Act. Among the audience were seniors from other departments also who are directly or indirectly concerned with the healthcare chapter. No department can function in isolation and it is only through coordinated activity that public health can be maintained at reasonable standard.
