This has reference to the news item, ‘Omar asks Govt to concentrate on bettering educational system’ DE Jan 24.
It is a matter of satisfaction that the State legislators including former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have debated on prevailing status of education in the State. It really underlines the fact that education is one of the key sectors that could influence the course of State’s history in coming times.
It may be stated here that education system is in a shambles in the State due to various factors- political, geographical and militancy etc. No Government has shown much interest to develop it on modern lines.
The Government run schools suffer from acute shortage of staff and infrastructure. Some schools are over staffed, and some understaffed. There is immediate need to rationalize staff to ocvercome the existing imbalance in these institutions.
The curriculum needs to be updated periodically, so that it is in tune with present education system prevailing at national and international levels.
Sufficient grants be allocated to the institutions to run them efficiently. There are other matters that also need to be taken into consideration while framing education policy.
