The recently concluded assembly elections of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have put question marks on the credibility of the exit or opinion polls.It is true of Gujarat elections in particular. Immediately after these exit polls by different channels and agencies were out on Dec14, debates of all sorts took place on these channels so much so that they became or proved to be boring and out of context .
When the actual results were out and they started showing entirely different picture , immediately these very channels started turning colours and debating exactly the obverse of what they discussed or debated earlier. A mockery of our otherwise worth envying electoral system surfaced by suspecting the fairness of the EVMs by those who saw the exit polls showed them losing the electoral battle. The repetitive same faces to debates on these channels otherwise makes such debates less interesting.
It is time to have a review of the exit polls to bring them nearer to accuracy by expanding its sample base and not indulge in haste to show ” We are the first ones ” to bring out the most authentic projection.
