SAMBA, Nov 6: Despite ban, the illegal mining goes unabated in several parts of river Basantar, here.
According to the report, illegal mining from river Basantar has become a matter of concern.
However, the concerned Department has failed to check illegal mining, which has resulted in large-scale environmental degradation.
Dozens of tractor trolleys and dumpers can be seen extracting mining material from the river.
Residents complained that the level of the river had gone down by several feet because of the large-scale extraction of stone and sand using heavy machinery. A number of complaints have been made but the authorities are paying no heed, they said.
Some of the locals namely Karan Kumar, Shanu Singh and Rampal Sambyal said that there is no check over illegal mining from river Basantar. Geology and Mining Department has turned a blind eye towards this rising menace of illegal mining, they said and added that in broad daylight, tractor trolleys and dumpers can be seen taking out minerals from the river Basantar.
They further said that the price of sand and other construction items are touching the sky, adding that if the system remains the same, how can a poor person can fulfill his or her dream of constructing a house.
They alleged that the some officials of the Geology and Mining Department are supporting the mining mafia and this nexus should be cracked.
The residents appealed to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Samba Rohit Khajuria to look into the matter and initiate strict action against mining mafia.
When contacted District Mining Officer (DMO) Samba Kulwant Singh told the Excelsior that the rate of royalty has been finalized and the environment clearance of 8 blocks have been received by the Department. He further said that the department is going to initiate strict action against those engaged in illegal mining from river Basantar.
When asked about involvement of officials of the department, he categorically denied and said that if any official will be found involved in extending support to mining mafia, strict action will be taken against him or her.
