IIT Jammu hosts Int’l Conference on Sustainable Materials & Infra

JAMMU, Dec 19: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu successfully hosted the International Conference on Sustainable Materials and Infrastructure (ICSMI-2025) from 16th to 18th December.
The three-day international conference was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Jammu, in collaboration with the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) Centre J&K and brought together leading academicians, researchers, industry experts, and practitioners from India and abroad to deliberate on sustainable construction technologies, eco-friendly materials, and innovative infrastructure solutions aimed at addressing global challenges related to climate resilience, resource efficiency, and sustainable urban development.
The conference commenced on 16th December with the inaugural ceremony attended by distinguished dignitaries including RS Yadav, Regional Officer, NHAI J&K; Prof Anurag Misra, Chairperson, ICSMI-2025; Prof Abhay Sharma, Dean (Academics), IIT Jammu; Prof Ankit Kathuria and Dr Deepak Yadav.
Over the first two days, the conference featured multiple technical sessions covering a wide range of contemporary themes such as advanced cementitious materials and high-performance concrete, earthquake-resistant structures and seismic response control, low-carbon cements, green concrete and waste material utilization, innovative bridge design and sustainable tunneling technologies, resource conservation and circular economy approaches, as well as applications of artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and environmental monitoring in construction.
A parallel workshop on “Advances in Sustainable Tunneling” was also conducted on 17th December, providing participants with practical insights and interactive discussions on emerging tunneling technologies and sustainable construction practices.
Outstanding research contributions were recognized through the Best Poster Award, encouraging innovation and academic excellence, while selected papers presented during the conference are slated for publication in reputed international journals including the ASCE Journal of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste.
The conference concluded with a valedictory session on 17th December, reflecting on key learnings, collaborative opportunities, and future research directions in sustainable infrastructure.
On 18th December, the participants went on a technical visit to the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge. The visit was conducted under the guidance of Rashmiranjan Mallick, Deputy Chief Engineer, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, offering participants first-hand exposure to advanced engineering practices, structural design excellence, and sustainable construction methodologies.
