IIT Jammu hosts Advanced Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Program

JAMMU, Feb 22: Advanced Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Programme (A-ESDP) on Bio-Entrepreneurship: Cultivating India’s Future, was successfully conducted at IIT Jammu, bringing together aspiring entrepreneurs from various institutions across India with the objective of developing innovation-driven ventures in the medical and biotechnology sectors.
The programme was designed as an interdisciplinary platform integrating medicine, engineering, science, and management to create a comprehensive framework for bio-entrepreneurship.
The programme commenced with an inaugural session marked by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Dr Sanjay Bhasin, senior professor and renowned surgeon from Government Medical College Jammu in the presence of distinguished dignitaries, including the Heads of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Biosciences & Bioengineering, the Dean of Skill Development, the Dean of Student Affairs, senior faculty members of IIT Jammu.
The dignitaries emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and translational research in addressing India’s healthcare and industrial challenges.
Prof Sanjay Bhasin, while delivering key note address, highlighted real-time surgical challenges and the evolving design of surgical instruments. He elaborated on precision requirements, ergonomic considerations, sterilization standards, durability constraints, and the need for cost-effective innovations in minimally invasive and procedure-specific surgical tools.
He said that Bio-Entrepreneurship combines biology expertise with business skills to turn ideas into venture, thereby driving innovation, economic growth, and employment in India. It is basically a flow of Innovations from Academia to Industry.
The programme further featured contributions from Dr Rahul Gorka of AIIMS Jammu, who discussed diagnostic and therapeutic gaps in healthcare, and Dr Sarabjit and Dr Ashish from IIM Jammu, who provided insights into entrepreneurial ecosystems, financial planning, and sustainability strategies. Technical perspectives were strengthened by Prof Dhiraj Kumar Mahajan from IIT Ropar, who addressed low-cost vascular stents and translational biomedical device development.
The programme concluded with an insightful session by DGM, CPC (M&LC), Jammu from J&K Bank, who explained MSME lending frameworks, funding mechanisms, and Udyam registration procedures, effectively linking technological innovation with institutional financial support. The event culminated with a valedictory ceremony and certificate distribution.
