IIT Jammu convocation ceremony tomorrow

JAMMU, Jan 7: IIT Jammu is organizing its maiden convocation ceremony on January 9, 2021 wherein its first batch of 79 students from Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Science Engineering will be conferred B Tech degrees.
This was informed here this evening during a press conference, which was addressed by Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairman, Board of Governors- IIT Jammu along with Prof Manoj Singh Gaur, Director-IIT Jammu and Prof Ashoke K Sarkar, Dean-Academics of the Convocation Committee.
The convocation ceremony will be organized in hybrid mode that is both offline and online. Out of a total of 79 passing out students, the ceremony will host 38 students and their parents on campus while the other students will receive their certificates in a live convocation stream arranged by the institute.
“The design theme of the ceremony has been inspired by the art and culture of Jammu and Kashmir due to which, the traditional convocation robes have been replaced with Firhans and Pakols,” said Saraf.
The chief guests for the institute’s first convocation ceremony are, Dr Arogyaswami J Paulraj- Professor Emeritus from Stanford University and Gurcharan Das, who is a celebrated author and columnist. Das also headed Procter and Gamble as CEO and took it to greater heights in India while Prof Paulraj is a Padmabhushan awardee, Indian American Electrical Engineer who has revolutionized high-speed wireless services for billions of people.
“The institute will confer B Tech degrees upon 79 students who started their journey at IIT Jammu, Paloura campus in 2016. The first batch of these IIT Jammu graduates is now working professionals who will be joining the event from around the country. The journey of these graduates is special in more ways than one since they completed their graduation amidst difficult times in the Union Territory followed by an abrupt exit from the campus due to COVID,” said the Director IIT Jammu.
The institute will also be unveiling iitjammuconvocation2020.com to honour the efforts and grit of its first batch. This website is a forever place for the students on the internet. The website will have downloadable photos of students from the graduation ceremony, online video backgrounds, Facebook frames and all their memories from their time in the institute.
The institute will also award its best performing students with a President’s Gold Medal, a Director’s Gold Medal and 3 Institute Silver Medals at the convocation ceremony.
