The Central and State Governments are going ahead with the proposal of establishing an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Jammu. The Union HRD Ministry has not approved any of the six sites proposed by the Site Selection Committee on the plea that identified sites are not suited for establishing a prestigious instituted of high repute to compete with other IITs in the country. The HRD Ministry wants a site that is not far away either from the main city or from the airport and railway station… As such, fresh search is on for making the final selection. Old Engineering College campus is one of the new choices for establishing the IIT.
The essential point is that the proposed IIT will have to serve the students from far off places in the region like Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Reasi, Rajouri, Mendhar, Budhal, and Poonch. Prospective students would naturally want the privilege of staying closer to the city of Jammu rather than live in far off districts. Also since outstanding faculties from the country and abroad will be often visiting the IIT for academic purposes, it will be inconvenient for them if they have to travel long distances from the airport. We find much sense in the argument of the HRD Ministry. As the Ministry wants that the IIT should become functional within three years, the process of finalization of the site for the IIT must be done within days. We appreciate the vision of the HRD that it would bear all the cost and even ensure that the maiden session begins as soon as possible. IIT in Jammu will be the harbinger of progress and prosperity for the entire region of Jammu and the State on the whole. Given the inherent talent among our youth, we are confident that establishing of an IIT will harness their creative faculty and Jammu will emerge on the technical and industrial map of India.
