JAMMU, Feb 19: Principal Secretary Higher Education, K B Aggarwal, today called for expanding the reach of specialized courses in mass communication and journalism to hitherto uncovered areas for meeting the requirements of youngsters desirous of pursuing career in media.
Addressing the students of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Jammu Centre here this afternoon, Mr Aggarwal emphasized the need for a specialized institution for imparting specialized training in the subject and hoped that IIMC will fulfil this requirement.
Aggarwal said the State Government would provide necessary support for streamlining the functioning of the Institute and referred to the allotment of 87 kanals of land at Bantalab for raising the campus in academic friendly environment.
He referred to the shift in academics with focus on courses having much potential in the job market and said this requirement should not miss the attention of the management. He said that amalgamation of courses like commerce and law has been a welcome trend and emphasised the need for close co-ordination with industry, which provides ample opportunities to professionals like journalists. He urged the faculty to redefine their course and teaching methodologies keeping in view the requirements of the industry.
The institute has already started its functioning in the State, in an accommodation arranged by the State Government, since last year and has succeeded in clinching 3rd place among all centres in the country in the December 2012 exams.
Director Courses from IIMC New Delhi, Prof. K.M.Shrisavatava, gave overall view of the Institute since its inception. While two faculty members stationed permanently in Jammu are taking care of the courses in the center, the visiting faculty is regularly being deputed from different part of country by Head Quarters. While IIMC is providing all equipment and other infrastructure beside faculty / manpower, the State Government has arranged the accommodation for the Institute and hostel / Guest house.
