SRINAGAR : Icy cold winds continued during the day while night remained chilly in the Kashmir valley, with Kargil remaining the coldest in the region. Border town of Kargil in Ladakh region remained coldest with minus 15.6 degree while summer capital, Srinagar, recorded minus 3.7 degree, freezing parts of the Dal Lake, taps and other water bodies partially.
A Met department spokesman said that a fresh WD, originating in Arabian sea is approaching the region which could result in rain or snow from January 20 onwards. However, the earlier WDs turned weak and left the region without any major impact on four-month-long dry weather, particularly in the plains, including Srinagar.
Though the dry weather has not only given rise to cold related diseases but affected vegetables and orchards. However, it was good for September 2014 flood affected people who are busy in reconstruction or repair of their damaged houses and shops in the valley.
Summer like weather condition prevailed in the valley as sun was out this morning though icy cold winds also continued. However, the night remained chilly with below sub zero temperature.
Met spokesman said though there was one degree improvement, the minimum temperature at border town of Kargil was minus 15.6 degree. At Leh it was minus 15 degree, he said. Water bodies remained frozen at Kargil and Leh. The summer capital, Srinagar, after above normal maximum temperature yesterday witnessed further drop in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays minus 3.3 degree night temperature, it dropped to minus 3.7 degree, about two notches below normal.
However, Pahalgam, the world famous health resort in south Kashmir remained coldest as minimum temperature dropped further and settled at minus 6.4 degree against yesterdays minus 6.2 degree. However, it was still three notches above normal. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which still awaits major snowfall this winter, recorded some improvement in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays minus 7.4 degree minimum temperature, it was minus 5.6 degree, more than two notches above normal.
He said Qazigund recorded minus 4.2 degree, Kupwara minus 4.1 degree and Kokernag minus 1.4 degree minimum temperature. (AGENCIES)
