SRINAGAR : An Indian Air Force (IAF) MIG-21 crashed in the central Kashmir district of Badgam before the pilot ejected safely today.
An inquiry has been ordered into the crash, Defence sources said, adding that the pilot had received some injuries and was shifted to 92 base hospital.
Defence ministry spokesman Colonel N N Joshi told that a MIG-21 of IAF crashed in general area of Soibugh in the central Kashmir when it was on a routine flight.
However, the pilot ejected safely, he said, adding that the MIG fell in the open field and there was no report of any loss of life or damage to property.
Locals, some of them working in their paddy field and orchards, said they heard a loud explosion after the crash.
Security force and state police personnel immediately rushed to the area and rescued the pilot. The area has been cordoned off and nobody was being allowed to go near the wreckage, they said.
Last year in May, a MIG-21 crashed in south Kashmir district of Anantnag in which a young pilot was killed.
In February this year, two pilots were killed after an army helicopter crashed in south Kashmir district of Bandipora. (AGENCIES)
