Due to geographical and topographical features, Leh has great potential for hydropower which can be generated through mini-hydel power projects in the district.
But this potential has not been exploited by the concerned department so far either due to shortage of funds or due to lack of technical know-how. Now, when the Union Ministry has sanctioned Rs 133 crore for this purpose, the department should identify the possible power projects.
The electricity scenario in the district is quite dismal. People depend on electricity provided by diseal generators which are neither economically feasible nor environmentally viable. Besides, the electricity through generators is far a limited period of 4 hrs, and not sufficient to run electronic gadgets. Besides, children face great difficulty in studying during evening hours in dim light. The Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency (LREDA) should lay thrust on generating electricity through mini-hydro power plants as there is no scope for big power projects in Ladakh division due to a number of factors.
