“My son saved me. No one came to our help since morning,” said a member of the affected family, adding that the incident took place early in the morning.
Officials said the houseboat tilted and partially submerged in the river, prompting efforts to prevent it from sinking further. As water began seeping into the vessel, locals also rushed to the spot and assisted in the rescue operation.
After sustained efforts, the houseboat was brought back to an upright position and secured with ropes tied to trees and other structures along the riverbank.
Srinagar witnessed intermittent rainfall throughout the day, contributing to rising water levels in the Jhelum. However, no casualties or injuries were reported.
Authorities later said the situation was brought under control after the houseboat was stabilised, preventing further damage.
