Dhaka, Aug 19: Bangladesh’s main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that if India’s ‘diplomatic message’ about Bangladesh, published in a Kolkata-based media, is true, then it is unexpected and unfortunate.
He said it is unexpected for a democratic country like India if the news is true. We hope that India will respect the democratic aspirations of the people of Bangladesh.
He said this to reporters after paying floral tributes at the tomb of BNP’s founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Saturday morning.
The BNP Secretary General said, India always talks about democracy. We hope that India will give full support to the national elections under a neutral and non-partisan government with the participation of all parties in our country.
Mirza Fakhrul said that if the news report is true, then India is talking about the internal politics of Bangladesh.
Mirza Fakhrul said, We want to say clearly that there is no possibility of any fundamentalist party coming to power in Bangladesh. In the 52-year history of Bangladesh, no fundamentalist party has ever come to power. On the contrary, their strength has been waning day by day.
The BNP leader said, We place our trust in the people of Bangladesh and on their strength.
Alleging that the Awami League is using the entire state machinery to stay in power, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Today they have taken away the rights of people to vote, they have taken away the freedom of the press, and they have taken away the independence of the judiciary.
This Government has destroyed the economy of Bangladesh in a very planned way. They have destroyed the potential of Bangladesh, and now they want to establish a monarchy by holding the people of Bangladesh hostage”.
The BNP Secretary General also said that the people of our country are now united, all the parties are united, and they have started fighting to get back their voting rights as well as democratic rights. The people will surely win in their struggle to get back their rights.
