The Vice President presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards to 84 artists from various fields of performing arts. These awards were established to recognise Indian artists aged over 75 who haven’t received any national honours in their careers. The NDA Government has certainly distinguished itself by consistently honouring artists through various means. This recent award is yet another example of the Government’s commitment to recognise and celebrate the contributions of artists, especially during the later stages of their lives. This recognition is a significant gesture, as it acknowledges the decades of dedication and hard work these artists have invested in preserving and advancing their respective art forms. The cash prize of one lakh, along with a ‘Tamrapatra’ and ‘Angavastram,’ serves as a symbol of prestige and appreciation. This recognition is likely to serve as a motivating factor for emerging artists, inspiring them to pursue and excel in their chosen fields. Although the recognition may have been delayed, it is heartening to see that these deserving artists have finally received the acknowledgement they deserve. Additionally, the fact that two awardees hail from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh adds to the pride of the people in these Union Territories, highlighting the rich cultural diversity and talent present in the region.
A four-day festival is currently underway, during which these awardees will showcase the pinnacle of their lifelong performances. This festival offers a cultural extravaganza for the entire nation, providing a unique opportunity for people to glimpse and relish the rich tapestry of our heritage and history. It allows individuals to forge a meaningful connection with their cultural roots and traditions. The Government must continue devising such innovative efforts to keep traditions alive. By investing in cultural heritage and supporting traditional artists and craftspeople, the Government not only enriches the cultural tapestry of the nation but also helps preserve and transmit these traditions to future generations. It’s a valuable investment in both cultural and economic terms, and one hopes to see more such initiatives in the future.
