JAMMU, Mar 30: Provincial president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), Rattan Lal Gupta (Adv) has called upon Union Home Minister Amit Shah to honour the commitment made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the restoration of Statehood.
Reacting to the Home Minister’s refusal to provide a definitive timeline for Statehood restoration, Gupta emphasized that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on the floor of Parliament and other multiple occasions, have assured the public of reinstating Jammu and Kashmir’s Statehood. He expressed concern that the absence of a clear timeline appears to undermine the massive mandate given to the National Conference in the recent Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
NC’s Provincial head highlighted the moral and constitutional responsibility of the Lieutenant Governor, being the head of UT, to actively pursue the resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet and recommended by him on October 19, 2024. This resolution, unanimously adopted under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, called upon the Union Government to restore the region’s Statehood in its original form.
The Cabinet had asserted that such restoration would initiate a healing process, reclaim constitutional rights, and protect the unique identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Reflecting on the recent elections, Rattan Lal noted the enthusiastic participation of the populace, driven by the hope of establishing a fully elected and democratic government enjoying the same privileges as other states. However, he expressed concern that this aspiration remains unfulfilled, leading to growing alienation among the people due to the prevailing dual power structure.
The Provincial president further emphasized the urgency of addressing these concerns to prevent further disenchantment among the people. He reaffirmed the NC’s commitment, under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to work tirelessly towards the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s Statehood and the establishment of a fully empowered democratic government.
