Highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir Valley reopens

SRINAGAR : Tthe national highway , connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley reopened today. Meanwhile, only one-way traffic continued on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway and historic Mughal road, connecting south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch across the Pirpanchal range. However, dozens of villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) in the frontier district of Kupwara and Bandipora remained cut off from their respective district headquarters for the past more than five months.
A traffic police official told UNI that one-way traffic was resumed today on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir. He said as per Border Roads Organisation (BRO), traffic on the highway was suspended yesterday for maintainance of the road, damaged due to heavy snowfall, landslides and snow avalanches during the winter.
Though one-way traffic was resumed last week on the highway, the Beacon has officially declared it open with traffic police personnel being deployed at different places on this side of the Zojila pass. (AGENCIES)
